What To Do With Your Junk Mail - Continued

Continued from What To Do With Your Junk Mail

Like I said before, another way to get rid of these unwanted items is to burn them. Most homeowner’s burn once a month or so anyway so why not get rids of these things while you are at it.  Keep a can for just burning materials and when you receive junk mail, toss them in there and when it gets full, burn them up.  This gets rid of the mail with the same security and also keeps them out of the landfills.

I would never recommend that a consumer throw away any personal or confidential information in the weekly trash.  There are too many places for it accidentally end up in.  There have been too many reported cases of criminals preying on innocent citizens and stealing their identity.  Once this has happened, it is a long and trying process to get out of.

Wouldn’t you feel safer knowing that no one can get your junk mail and find out your social security number or even just your name or phone number can give criminals just enough information to ruin your life.  If you properly get rid of your unwanted junk mail and magazines, you can protect yourself and maybe do a little extra for the environment too.

It is also a good idea to do this with all your other old personal documents that you are getting rid of such as billing statement, old credit cards and old bank statements.  Tell your friends and family members to do the same thing and put an end to cluttering junk mail.

Another option for paper junk mail
Comments by: Jim Waller from Clermont, FL.      Oct 24, 2005
As I was reading the article, I was glad to see the idea about recycling magazines. It is very Earth-friendly, and that is a good thing. When I got to the option of shredding and burning junk email, I was a little disapointed at more smoke in the atmosphere.
As an alternative, I propose taking the shredded documents, and making recycled, hand-made paper from it. You would only need a blender, some starch, large container of water and a screen. Blend the shreds of paper in some water, put the pulp in the large container of water and stir the whole mess around until it begins to break up. Add the starch. Use a screen to skim out the fibers, press and let dry.
Voila! Now you have Earth-friendly paper and a great project if you have children. Your information should be secure, and you can feel secure about recycling.
