How To Get Children To Do Their Chores - Continued

Continued from How To Get Children To Do Their Chores

For the younger children, this may not work so well, or maybe it will depend on the chore and the reward.  If you want the younger ones to do something for you, tell them that they would really be helping you out and how important of a job it is.  This seems to make them want to be a helper and that makes them feel good to be helping you.  If they don’t want to do any chores then take something away.  If you say that you are going to throw the toys away if they are not picked up, then do it.

Of course don’t actually throw it away, but hide it and when they do pick them up, give it back. They don’t want their toys to be thrown away and you don’t want to have to go buy another one.

If you want them to put their clothes away and they don’t, tell them how “big kids” put their own clothes away and that should make them want to feel “big” and do the chore.  You should still give them a time limit because “now” is just another word to them too.

If you make the time limits reasonable and fair and the consequences real, and maybe a few rewards now and then, hopefully your kids will do their chores a little faster and make it a little easier on you.
