Cut Costs in ‘Owning’ a Home - Continued

Continued from Cut Costs in ‘Owning’ a Home

If you are paid down on your mortgage a bit, you have to tell the bank you want this taken off your mortgage and you will start putting that extra money back into your own pocket!

Occasionally you may come into some extra money in your household budget. If you can, make one extra payment a year on your mortgage. What this is going to do is cut the interest that you pay on your mortgage, and after ten years, you will find that you saved an entire year of paying on your home. It all adds up on the total price that you pay for your home, and well worth the extra efforts.

To save money in your household budget, and if your children have moved out or if your family has gotten smaller, consider buying a smaller home and selling your large home. A small home is going to be more affordable, easier to heat, and it will save you money in the end!

One last way that you can put extra money in your own pocket when you own your home is that you can rent out a room, rent out half your house, rent out your garage or storage space to someone else. While you are giving up a portion of your home, or your space, the extra money can really help when you have bills that are due!
