Your Child’s First Day Of School

Maybe it’ll be your child’s first day of school soon and you’re wondering how you’re going to handle it?  The first day can be nerve-racking and exciting for both you and your child.  This is just one of many milestones that you and your child will have to experience over his lifetime.

You will need to make this a memorable day for your child with out the tears and fears. Be conscious on how you express your feelings, your child can sense any negative feelings which you express and most likely cause your child to have negative feelings also.

Start preparing your child for the first day by reading stories about the first day of school.  Visit your local library and find some books on the first day of school.  This will give you the closeness you and your child both need.

Talk with your child upon what is going to be expected of him or her.  Explain the routine that your child will go through and let them know about the time school will start, what time school let’s out and when lunch time will be.  If you’re not exactly sure talk to the school they are always happy to help the new little ones entering their school for the first time. Answer any questions that your child has about school.  If you’re not sure of the answer be sure to find it out.

Most schools will allow future students to visit the class room on a particular day permitting you to visit with your child which will give you and your child a chance to get familiar with the teacher and the classroom.

To get your child ready for his first day of school go on a shopping trip to stock up on school supplies and school clothes.  Make a big deal out of each and every item that your child picks out.  Your child will be very excited to try out these items but tell him that they are for school he will be excited and looking forward to using them.

Be sure to inform your child if you will be picking him up or riding a bus.  Go over bus safety rules and the need to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before entering the street.  Explain the importance of not standing on the bus and waiting until the bus stops before standing up.  Preparing your child on the bus stop and school stop will give him the knowledge to exit the bus at the right stop and not before.  It may also be a little more comforting to you if you follow the bus the first day of school to be sure your child doesn’t hop off at the wrong stop.
