We all want and need a little love in our lives, and for many of us, we find companionship by having pets involved in our lives. Pets come in many forms from birds, snakes, mice, rabbits, cats, dogs, horses, and even goldfish but what makes them special is that they are our pets and not one else’s.
If you have been living by yourself for sometime, you will need to make a few adjustments if choosing a pet. Some pets require a lot of attention, while others do not. For example, a bird, a goldfish, or a snake will not need as much attention as a hamster or a dog. The higher the need for attention that the pet has the more time you must have to spend with the pet in order for it to behave, to grow and for it to be kind and gentle to you as well as those who visit your home.
How can you gauge what type of pet is best for your personal needs? Let’s take a look at how much time you have in your day. Do you spend more then eight hours away from the home everyday? If you do, a dog might not be a good pet, as a dog needs to be let outside often. If you are gone all the time, but you have a dog run or a fenced in yard, a dog could be a great pet for you. If you are gone all the time, but you live in the city or in a small apartment a cat, or other type of animal that doesn’t need outdoors most likely is going to suit your needs best.
Spending a lot of time away from the home, a small animal that does not need to run would best suit your needs. A bird in a cage, a hamster in a cage or an aquarium full of your favorite fish would be easy to care for, and they don’t require too much daily interaction for them to thrive and continue to grow.
If you live in the city or in a small apartment, you often will need to check with your property owner about what type of pets you are permitted to have before you get a pet. Birds, fish, and hamsters are not often considered pets that will leave smells or stains in the apartment after you move out. Often dogs, cats and sometimes snakes or iguanas are only permitted with the property owner permission. Another type of animal that may only be permitted in the apartment with the landlords permission is a ferret.
Costly pets can be overwhelming if you are on a fixed budget. Some types of pets will require little attention but can be costly when it comes to food, preparing their habitat or other things involved in raising pets. An example of a pet with an expensive need would be a bird that only eats a certain food that you must run across town for that is more than what your meal would cost. Snakes that only eat live food or iguana’s that require special heat lights and heat rocks are another type of expensive type pet.
