Tension Headaches

Almost everyone gets tension headaches from a dull ache to unbearable pain.  Stretching, or tension of the outer lining of the brain, the skin and the muscles that cover the skull, and the nerves that travel from the brain to the head and face causes them.  Tight muscles in the shoulders, back and neck can also cause tension headaches.  The list of causes is endless and could include commuting, loud noises, dealing with stress, or not enough or too much sleep.  There are some things you can do to treat a tension headache.

1.) Aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen can blunt or eliminate the pain.
2.) Soak in a hot bath or lie down in a dark room with an ice bag on your forehead.
3.) Get a massage.
4.) Take a nap.
5.) Exercise regularly or do yoga, meditation, or other muscle relaxation exercises.

Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches can cause terrible pain and prevent sufferers from going about their lives.  Migraines are believed to occur when blood vessels in the brain and scalp either close down, resulting in limited blood flow, or open way up and become swollen.  It is generally focused on one side of the head.  Pain can bring sensitivity to light, noise or movement.
There are a combination of self-care techniques and appropriate medication that can help manage or eliminate this painful problem.

You may be able to relieve or control pain from a migraine by:
1.) Lying down in a cool, dark, quiet place.
2.) Putting an ice bag on your head.
3.) Take over the counter painkillers.  Try to avoid food or drinks with caffeine.  This could cause a rebound headache.
4.) Do exercise or meditation.
