In my many years of past working experience as a waitress, I have seen many good waitresses as well as not so good ones. The one thing that you defiantly need to have is patience, along with an upbeat and friendly personality. People chose where they want to eat, and even though good food is the main reason why consumers pick a restaurant they also want to feel welcome and appreciated.
There is no better feeling than a customer walking into the restaurant where you work, and have them ask for your section. When this happens you know that you are doing your job well, and sometimes even more than that, you are making someone else feel good.
There is more to waitressing, than just taking orders and refilling drinks. Some misinformed people think that waiters and waitress are in this business because they have no real skills or “brains”, and can’t do anything else.
Well they are wrong. I wander if people know that most of the waiters and waitress out there are putting themselves through college, and restaurant and tavern owners tend to work around their class schedules. Also, there are many parents out there that have to work around their spouses schedule so that one parent is always home with the children.
And believe it or not there are some people out there doing this kind of work because they want to and they wouldn’t want to do anything else. Like I said before, you need patience for this job to deal with the customers who treat in a disrespectful way. Some people just don’t understand that if you weren’t there doing what you do, then they would have to get it for themselves.
In order to give your customer good service, you need to make sure that you listen to them and if that means repeating their order once they have given it to you, then do it.
If you repeat it than that lessens the chance of a wrong order or embarrassing mistaken later when the food comes out to the table. Also, make eye contact with each patron when you are speaking to them, this makes the visit seem a little more personal and relaxed. Always remember to be polite and say thank you and your welcome.
After the order is taken, if they have salads or appetizers bring them to the table as soon as possible and if there is a delay on food or any problems keep them informed. Let them know ahead of time if there is a wait on food because of the kitchen being busy or some food items require longer cooking times, such as steaks or chicken. If you tell them ahead of time, this will avoid an impatient customers continuously asking where their food is.
