Cutting the costs of Moving

Moving from an apartment or a house to another place can be expensive, back breaking and a task that just seems as if it is never going to end. There are any number of reasons why one person could be involved in moving from one place to another, but what ever the reason is, taking all of your belongings with you is going to be a chore that can be costly. Planning a move can save you hundreds and sometimes-even thousands of dollars you didn’t even realize it could take to move.

Moving will involve a lot of your time. Packing your household goods, moving furniture and determining what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of before moving.

If you are going to use a mover check into moving between October and May if possible as these are times when the moving company is not going to be as busy. Movers are most often booked weeks in advance during the summer months.

If you are going to use a moving company check into the difference in the rates in the beginning or end of the month compared to the middle of the month. While many people have to move at the end of the month, if you can move in the middle of the month you are going to find this is a slow time for a moving company so you can take advantage of additional savings.

Most often moving companies are going to base their fee on the poundage that you are moving and what they have to lift. If you have fragile items that have to be taken extra special care of you might want to move them yourself to save fees. As far as the poundage of moving, for your large items that you don’t need any more like two extra beds, or an extra couch and such you might want to give these items away instead of paying to have them moved for you.

When possible, cut back on the extras you have in your apartment or home before you move. For example, if you are going to move mid month, cut off the cable two weeks before you move so you can get refunds from the money you have paid on the equipment or from companies who require you to pay ahead for services.

For water, electric and trash deposits that are required in some areas of the world, try your best to collect the deposits you have paid on these accounts before moving so you have a bit of extra cash, and that no one forgets about refunding your money due.

Cut the costs of moving by hiring a small truck and moving as much as you can by yourself. While you can move all the books, kitchen stuff, clothes and such, hiring a moving company just for furniture is going to save you more money. Ask friends and family to help you move furniture with a rented trailer is needed to avoid paying the movers at all. Sometimes just making lunch for friends after the move is all you need to do to save lots of money. Of course if  you use friends and family to move, you will be someday asked to help them move as well!
