Around The House Tips

There are so many things laying around our house that we never use but have so many uses.  We often spend money on expensive cleaning products or we are always running to the store to buy some little gadget to fix a problem.  There are a few things that you can do with stuff that most of us already have lying around.

Dryer sheets make good air fresheners.  Just put a few under the cushions of your couch or chairs and it will make the room smell good for days.  You can also put one in a smelly shoe to cut back the odor or put one in a musty closet to make it smell fresh again.

Or you can hang a dyer sheet outside in the summer and it will keep the mosquitoes away.  You can use plain baking soda as a carpet deodorizer before you vacuum.  This works just as well as the store brand.  Instead of buying expensive laundry stain removers, you can just use dawn dishwashing liquid, it will take mostly anything out.  If your kids like to draw on your walls with crayon try some toothpaste and water, it will take the crayon right off.

To clean your eyeglasses safe, use a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a soft dry clothe.  This is so easy and you don’t have to buy the expensive pads at the eye doctor.

Here are a few helpful kitchen hints passed down to me from my family members.  To make better sauerkraut, pour in a can of beer, light or regular it doesn’t matter.  You can make a cake moister by using applesauce instead of oil and it is healthier too.

Put a slice of apple or bread in with your cookies to keep them from getting hard.

When you cook bacon run it under warm water before you fry it, this will keep it from shrinking.

When you make fresh brownies or cakes, use a plastic knife to cut them. This will keep them from sticking and making crumbs.

To make your coffees stained coffee pots and cups look shiny again, use a few ice cubes and a teaspoon of salt and shake it around.  Good as new.  If you cut your finger in the kitchen or in the garage, use some super glue on the wound, it will close it up and stop the bleeding.

You can get rid of fleas by washing your pet in garlic and vinegar water, the flea’s hit the road from the smell.  To get rid of fleas in your house, put out some bowls of water on the floor and furniture with a nightlight by it: somehow the fleas are attracted to the light and jump in the water and die.

A good way to get wax out of your clothes or table clothes is to put a paper bag over the wax and use a hot iron over it.  This usually absorbs the wax out.  Peanut butter will take out bubble gum from clothes.  Just spread it over the area and wash.
